About Sub-Domains

I had been contemplating splitting my site into a few subdomains. For those who don't know, www.mysite.com, clubs.mysite.com and help.mysite.com are all subdomains of mysite.com. I wanted to find out the pros and cons.

Subdomains: What's a subdomain? Web Hosting for Beginners This site explains what they are and what they are used for. While they talk of loadshedding and other matters, what I was looking for was the info on information organisation.

Domains: Structure -- Subdomains A long article, of interest to me was his explanation again of information organisation in particular the management of sub-sites by other people rather than registering of multiple domains.

Promotion Tip: Site Organization With Subdomains This page had the most practical information. Points of note were that the subdomain should have the full site structure. That all subdomains should be unique. That by default cookies do not cross over subdomains, although they can be shared over a main site and it's subdomains. That the subdomain is fully independant.

These sites were found with a Google Search for about sub-domains, further sites can also be found by running your own search.

I decided to split my personal pages from the main site to maintain the site's focus while still having the other information available.
