Search Engines
Search Engines send out spiders to look for sites from links or submissions.
Search Engine companies are not amused when you try to cheat.
- Spiders start from the index page and follow the links from there.
- Many spiders can't read javascript, java, flash, etc, they definately can't read off page javascript. Somewhere on the page have simple text links that the spider can follow.
- Spiders read the pages form the top down. They place more emphasis on the text at the top.
- The SE companies place more emphasis on links in sentances than menus.
- SE companies use your descriptions in titles, headings, etc to establish keywords. They can't read a stylesheet so they need to see the traditional H1, em, and other tags. If you don't like the default styles then change them in the stlyesheet.
- Spiders count the words on a page to decide what is important. There is a balance between no relevant words and too many, keep it natural. I once almost died of embarassment. I had an entire page without the most important keyword. Human visitors could see the picture, but the spider couldn't.
A few years ago link pages were very important. Then came the link farms and they decreased in popularity. Today small tightly focussed link pages have more credibility than monster pages. Reciprocal links are no longer necessary, at least not ten sites with the same links. Try to name the page something other than links.
For humans and spiders apparently text links are better than banner ads. Spiders appreciate links that include the subject in the link text. They prefer Gorgious fairy and fantasy prints at Home of Faeries. To Katlin Designs, flower girl and bridesmaid dresses. (Hey a girl can try!)
A new development in search engine ranking is social bookmarking. A subject that I know little about.
