Hi,
Does your photo program have a curves or levels adjustment? It is generally under > photo adjustment > curves or > photo adjustment > levels. They can save what many would regard as a throw away photo.
They are not 100% essential, a lot can be done with brightness and contrast level slider bars, but they do make life simpler.
Below is a photo adjusted in Paint Shop Pro as example as how extreme makeovers are possible. Many programs have various types of curves. Start with the straight one then go on to the curves if the photo's balance still doesn't look right.
Here are another two examples of curves in action.

See the white diamond? This is the one to move if the picture is too dark. If the picture is too light move the black diamond. Then move the grey diamond so you have good contrast. |
This is the photo after. Note the grey diamond is not in the middle between the black and white. |
This is the other one. |
Open your photo in Irfanview. Available free for non-commercial use at: http://www.irfanview.com/ Download the plugin exe while you are there. Go > Image > Color Adjustment. Always start with the gamma. This lightens the dark parts without adjusting the light parts. Then Go on to the brightness and contrast adjustments. As you can see I've only adjusted the gamma on this photo.
